European Team kicks off Ryder Cup week in style
Jose Maria Olazabal is in buoyant mood as he starts one of the biggest weeks of his life. It is, without a doubt, one of the biggest honours in sport to be asked to Captain a Ryder Cup Team, and Olazabal travelled to Medinah with a smile on his face for the entire duration of the eight hour flight. As he boarded the Virgin Atlantic plane chartered to carry members of the European Team and officials from London to Chicago, he carried with him the golden trophy that he hopes to take back home with him on Monday. And he looked like a man who was ready for the challenge ahead, as he continued the ‘team building’ process that began months ago.
Olazabal, along with Vice Captains Darren Clarke and Miguel Angel Jiminez, accompanied Paul Lawrie, Nicholas Colsaerts and Francesco Molinari (and former Ryder Cup Captain and eight-time team member Sam Torrance) as they flew to join their team mates already on American soil. Dressed impeccably for the journey in elegant travel attire, the team had been kitted out by the Italian luxury menswear label, Canali, a Preferred Supplier to the European Ryder Cup Team since 2006.
The Milan-based atelier has created formal wear for the Welcome, Opening and Closing ceremonies and the Gala dinner, at the K Club, Valhalla, Celtic Manor and now, for this week’s events at the Medinah Country Club in Illinois. In addition, they have provided the players’ on-course trousers , and a travel wardrobe to ensure they arrive at the Ryder Cup in style.
Sporting cream two-ply fine-gauge cashmere long-sleeved polo-shirts, pure wool lightweight travel pants in anthracite grey and cognac calfskin brogues, the players, their Captain and vice Captains added an element of elegance to the transatlantic flight. And, as we touched down to a runway salute from the Airport fire brigade, they disembarked in stylish caramel sports jackets, personally tailored for each individual from a hi-tech crease-resistant high-twist lightweight wool cloth. It was a refined note that set the stage for the week ahead, setting the bar for the American team who are equally fired up to win back the Ryder Cup from their Continent counterparts. The world awaits, as do the crowds in the Illinois sunshine, for the spectacle waiting to unfold before us…
