Past Ryder Cup Captains join high profile stars in a fun-filled Celebrity Scramble to kick of the week in Medinah

For all the sporting splendour to come this week at the Medinah Country Club, there was an air of fun as a rollcall of past US Ryder Cup Captains tee-ed off with a clutch of sports heroes and showbusiness stars in a fun-filled Celebrity Scramble. Best known for his role in the fairway frolic Caddyshack, actor Bill Murray displayed his unique sense of style in a pair of trousers decorated with Varga-style starlets teamed with a tie adorned with a map of the Chicago Transit Authority “El” trains - in a welcome nod to his hometown here in Illinois. Justin Timberlake , Murray’s teammate (they were partnering Tom Lehman and Dave Stockton) for the day, was a popular draw, signing autographs for fans as his fiancée, the actress Jessica Biel watched from quietly from a distance, screening herself from the September sun with a chic shrunken parasol. Male fans were clearly thrilled by her attendance, and shouted “We love you, Jessica!” as she followed Timberlake and his teammates to a second place, six-under-par finish.
Local superstars Robbie Gould, who plays for the Chicago Bears, and former Chicago Blackhawk Stan Mikita, took to the fairways alongside 2010 and 1985 captains Corey Pavin and Lee Trevino, but their sporting prowess elsewhere failed to translate to a result on this occasion.
Olympic hero Michael Phelps opted for a understated style in a fitting ‘swimming pool blue’ shirt, teaming up with comedian George Lopez – mischievously introduced on the tee as a ‘multiple Olympic gold medal winner’, much to the hilarity of the crowds amassed to witness this inaugural ten-hole foursomes event. Playing alongside 2004 captain Hal Sutton and 1995 captain Lanny Wadkins, Phelps and Lopez clearly proved they are on ‘winning form’ with a nine-under-par finish that saw them clinch first place at this high-spirited crowd-pleasing event.
