The Ryder Cup kicks off in style
As the clock struck four on Thursday afternoon at Medinah Country Club, just northwest of Chicago, thousands of people lined the undulating landscape on this picturesque golf course. They were all waiting for one thing: the Opening Ceremony of the 39th Ryder Cup.
Here, basking in the golden glow of early Autumn sunshine, we - and millions watching around the globe - were formally introduced to 24 of the best golfers in the world. Each and every one of those men has earned his place on individual merit and for three days this weekend, will become a team player.

And, as the members of the European and US Ryder Cup Teams stepped forward one by one to wave to the vast crowd, it gave Captain Jose Maria Olazabal a moment to reflect on his illustrious history with this most magnificent of sporting showcases. As he wiped a tear from his eye, remembering his friend, compatriot and playing partner, Seve Ballesteros, the crowd lifted him from his thoughts with the chant “Jose, Jose, Jose” and the waving of bright blue flags. It was a touching moment for those who remembered the electric partnership ‘Seve and Olly’ had on the golf course, and one which brought both teams together “in the spirit of friendship”. This was a theme that ran through the whole ceremony, with Olazabal stating that “the camaraderie of both sides is something I want to cherish forever".
Formalities over, and the sun setting low in the distance, we were treated to a performance of the American national anthem by young songster Jordin Sparks, a winner on the popular talent show, American Idol, as the Team flags were lifted high above Medinah Country Club, so they may flutter in the breeze in this, The Windy City.
